Selena gomez

Selena gomez chatted with dr. Vivek murthy, former surgeon general under the obama administration, in an instagram video that was posted to rare beauty’s instagram account on october 10th, which also marks world mental health day.

Selena and dr. Murthy chatted about everything from chronic loneliness to the healing power of human connection. During the chat, selena opened up about how she dealt with loneliness at the start of the current pandemic the world is facing, and how that affected her mental health. "In the beginning, i couldn't deal with it that well. I kind of went into a bit of a depression. And then i started going into a place where i was really writing and being active. I guess it just forced me to have that time.

Selena then went into further detail about how this situation has allowed her to make time for things that are important to her, like spending time with family. She said quote, "slowly, towards the end, i found the things i'm doing are coming out, and that was extremely exciting for me. I've worked on personal things like a beauty line that has a goal of reaching $100 million in 10 years for mental health.”

And selena also talked about how she is an extrovert and loves connecting with people, which made coping during this time especially difficult. "my job is a lot of travel, connecting with people, making people happy, and that makes me happy, so it has been a struggle.” and she also opened up about how she’s been able to go to the studio more recently, which is a great news for us selenators, as that means we may get to hear new music sometime in the future!

During the interview, selena also talked about how she thinks it’s important to stay informed but also be able to take breaks as well. She said quote, “i think it's important to stay informed and be aware of the latest news, but also take breaks from it because it can be overwhelming."

She also opened up about how she personally hasn’t had social media on her phone in two years, and that she believes social media may be one of the reasons that people feel lonely and disconnected. “so i believe heavily that there is something about social media um, and it’s technology getting blamed for increases in loneliness and disconnection.”

And we are so thankful that selena is so open and honest with her fanbase, and unafraid to share her authentic thoughts and feelings with the world. Selena was a guest on miley cyrus’ instagram series, ‘bright minded,’ back in april, where she opened up about her bipolar diagnosis.

Selena chatted with miley about how once she realized she was bipolar, she began to learn more about her diagnosis, and it no longer scared her. She talked about how she felt when she realized she was bipolar, saying quote, "

I went to one of the best mental hospitals in ... America, mcclean hospital, and i discussed that after years of going through a lot of different things, i realized that i was bipolar. And so when i got to know more information, it actually helps me. It doesn't scare me once i know it."

And again, we are so thankful for selena’s ability to be vulnerable and help a wide audience of people who may be experiencing similar struggles. And fans took to the comment section to thank selena for using her platform to spread awareness.

I’m so proud of you @selenagomez” this person said, “so proud of @selenagomez and everything she is vocal about. Her heart is so pure and this message is super important.”

and this fan wrote, “i love and enjoy listening to @selenagomez she's so genuine and real and that's why she's close to our hearts. I'm sure all those who love her feel that connection.” but now i want to know all your thoughts! Did you tune into selena gomez’s interview with dr. Murphy?
