Ariana grande depression and anxiety mental health.Hey everybody! Today i wanna talk about terror and our mental health. The reason i wanna talk about this is because first of all it's very important and it's something we should all be talking about. 


But also, earlier this week there was a bombing in manchester outside of an ariana grande concert when people were leaving.

When the concert had finished and it was horrific. Many people died, many people were injured. And it was extremely frightening, and for a long period of time peoples children had been missing.

It's been extremely scary and terrifying. And so what i wanna talk to you about today is: what is the respons that we may have to a terror attack, such as that? What is normal? And how do we know when to reach out to see a professional? For starters i want you to know that whatever you experience in light of a terror attack, something extremely frightening.

You worry for your life and the life of others. That whatever you are feeling is normal.

It's okay to be scared, it's okay to feel hyper vigilant, like on edge. Everything is frightening to you.

You may have nightmares, you may struggle to concentrate. You may feel grief. And just extreme sadness for those who were hurt. So i want you to know, no matter what you are experiencing, it is normal! It is okay!

We all experience terror and ptsd-like symptoms differently. Following a traumatic event or a terrorist attack such as the bombing in manchester, i want you to know, that it is very normal to struggle to sleep at all.

And if we do, we have nightmares. Some people report being extremely irritable, others having body aches, feeling like their heart is racing. There are a lot of different things that we can experience.

Now i'll link an amazing article from the va that talks about ptsd-like symptoms and things that are quote unquote "normal".

But what i want to talk about next is when those symptoms get worse and we need to reach out for help. Some of the symptoms we could have that would show me as a mental health professional that you need to reach out for help and see someone and talk about it is:

Number 1: if we are struggling with a lot of dissociation. It's very normal to experience it in the moment and the day or two following. But if this persist and if it's hard for you to even come back into your body at all.

That is a first red flag. The second is:

If we keep re-experiencing the event. Having things like flashbacks. Body memories where we feel like we are back at the event and it's happening to us again.

The third is: extreme avoidance, meaning that we don't want to go out and see anyone.

It can even look like agoraphobia. Which is when we struggle to go out of our house at all sometimes, or out of our room for many people.

And so if we're avoiding situations and seeing people that we love, getting out of our house, going about our daily life. That's another red flag.

And a fourth red flag would be if we start using substances all of a sudden. And we are using them to numb out from all that we are experiencing.

And so if we find ourselves having any problematic substance abuse, that's another reason for concern and another reason to reach out for help.

The fifth red flag would be severe hyper arousal, meaning we have panic attacks, we are always on edge.

Everything makes us really jumpy and it's not getting any better. And another red flag, the sixth red flag, could be if we're experiencing extreme bouts of depression. We find it hard to get motivated at all, we can't concentrate at all.

We wonder why we're here, we have some suicidal thoughts. The overall message i want you to hear, is that if your symptoms persists, if it makes it hard for you to do your daily tasks. Live your every day life and function fully with the people that you love and care about.

Know that whatever you are experiencing, even if you weren't there in person, that doesn't mean that you don't have a right or that it's not okay to feel trauma.

Many people experience ptsd when it was a loved one that was there because they were so frightened and so worried about their safety.

Maybe they didn't hear from them for a couple of days. We can still experience ptsd symptoms and it is so important that we reach out for help. But leave in the comments if there is a resource in your area that you know has opened up.

Because a lot of these are short term counselling help, ptsd focused and specialized therapists. So it's really a great resource. I just want you to know that no matter what you are experiencing, no matter how you feel, that it's warranted. And that it is normal.

When we fear for our lives or the lives of the ones that we care for, or we witness a very frightening event, it's normal to feel terrible and to have a lot of the symptoms that i've talked about. But please, if you find these symptoms getting worse, if it's hard for you to talk to those who you love, about it. That's what mental health professionals are for!
