And um today is a really important day i think what it symbolizes so it's october 10th and it's world mental health day and you guys know how passionate i am about mental health and conversations about mental health and i mean i think it's the work of our whole lifetime as long as we have brains through which we see our lives right it's the work of our lifetime to tend to and take care of our of our mental health .

everybody’s journey and experience with mental/ emotional health is different. I wanted to make a quick video talking about my journey and some tools that have helped me in case they might be helpful for some of you who may be watching.The thing that’s helped me the most is doing research and empowering myself with the knowledge of how the brain works and what is happening inside me so I don’t feel so caught off guard when strong emotions come up. Learning little by little about the science behind the brain and the nervous system makes it so I’m less scared of how i feel and can implement tools (for example, deep belly breathing, grounding myself in my senses - see, touch, hear, feel, smell). I’ve learned about the neuroscience behind trauma response and the vagus nerve and that when I feel stress/ anxiety, my body thinks it’s under a threat and is actually mobilizing to protect me, so I don’t get mad at it anymore, I just remind myself I’m safe. There’s so much information that has empowered me to know my body and my brain better so I can be in the drivers seat. This isn’t a one time thing, it’s something i work at everyday, but it’s worth it. There are so many things that affect our mental health, traumatic experiences, emotional abuse, being in extremely toxic environments. There’s systemic oppression, discrimination, inequality, that have been going on for far too long, not to mention financial troubles that have only been made worse by a global pandemic, and countless more things that affect our mental health- but i wanted to share my journey and some of the tools that have helped me take my power back. Healing is a lot of work, but don’t let anybody tell you it’s impossible, even if it feels like it right now- you will be stronger, wiser, and a more compassionate human for it. I’m committed to doing my best to help others as much as I can while working towards healing myself. Let’s de- stigmatize conversations around mental health, mental illness, and trauma so we can help each other heal and also take preventative action. 💕💕 (PS I know I’m a day late but I wanted to post anyways hehe)

And our and our well-being and it's so important i think that we uh in this society destigmatize conversations around mental health and and struggling and what it means to take care of yourself when you're struggling and how to and preventative mental health how to um do the the practices and the things um whether it's reaching out to your support group or meditation or exercise or drinking water preventative mental health taking care of yourself before you kind of hit that place of anxiety or depression.


Or um or however your mental health uh suffers when you're not in a good place but anyway yeah i think it's um it's crucial to have these conversations and especially always but especially this year it's been an incredibly challenging year for so many people and it's more important right now than ever to take care of ourselves and have conversations about mental health and so i am incredibly honored to turn over my instagram stories to three amazing grassroots organizers who are strong advocates for mental health especially in the activism space alejandra gomes from lucha angela lang from block and ali simon who's a meditation facilitator .

Camila admitted that behind the fun and glamorous instagram photos she's posted over the last year there were a lot of difficult moments that she shielded from the public eye she wrote here's what there aren't pictures of from the last year me crying in the car talking to my mom about how much anxiety and how many symptoms of ocd i was experiencing my mom and me in a hotel room reading books about ocd because i was desperate for relief me experiencing what felt like constant unwavering relentless anxiety that made day-to-day life painfully hard .

Camilla said her ocd took the form of quote obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors explaining it made me feel like my mind was playing a cruel trick on me it affected me physically too i couldn't sleep for a long time i had a constant knot in my throat i had chronic headaches and my body went through what felt like multiple rollercoaster rides every day while she was going through all that mental and physical turmoil she didn't tell anyone how much she was struggling she explained .

I was embarrassed and ashamed i didn't want the people who thought i was strong and capable and confident the people who believed in me to find out that i felt weak but as she came to realize speaking out about her ocd was actually the best way to heal it she wrote denying my suffering and berating myself didn't help things i needed to say those three revolutionary words i need help camilla eventually did ask for help diving into months of cognitive behavioral therapy meditation and breath work she's also been practicing self-love self-compassion and self-awareness and all that has gotten her into a much better place.

Now she says i feel the healthiest and most connected to myself i've ever been and nowadays i rarely suffer from ocd symptoms anxiety comes and goes but now it feels like just another difficult emotion as opposed to something that's consuming my life camila ended her essay by urging any readers struggling with their own mental health to speak up too and offered these words of wisdom far from being a sign of weakness owning our struggles and taking the steps to heal is powerful you.
